Boy playing with matches starts brush fire in Overgaard

OVERGAARD, Ariz. -- Authorities say an 8-year-old boy playing with matches started a brush fire along state Route 260 in Overgaard over the weekend.

The Navajo County Sheriff's Office, Linden Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, Heber-Overgaard Fire Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the area of SR 260 and milepost 308 at approximately 11:40 a.m. Saturday.

Sheriff's deputies observed the fire was growing quickly and traveling west along the highway.

The fire burned approximately 2 acres adjacent to the U.S. Forest Service building and a small portion of private property. 

No structures were damaged, but it came within 100 feet of the U.S. Forest Service building.

The investigation is continuing and charges may be pursued.
