Arizona Republicans hold convention in PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Republicans are getting ready to pick delegates to attend the Republican National Convention to be held in Tampa, Fla., in August.
The state party's 2012 convention is being held Saturday at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
Party members participating in the state convention are scheduled to pick 58 delegates to attend the national convention.
The Republican National Committee is penalizing Arizona by dropping half of those delegate slots because the state held its presidential primary too early under national party rules.
But party spokesman Shane Wikfors says Arizona Republicans will pick a full 58-member delegation in the expectation that the penalty will be lifted before the national convention.
Scheduled speakers Saturday include Gov. Jan Brewer and Josh Romney, a son of presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
