GUNTOWN, Miss. -- Mississippi authorities say a fugitive accused of a double-slaying and kidnapping has been shot but the two girls he fled with are safe.

Adam Mayes, 35, was found on Thursday with 12-year-old Alexandria Bain and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain on County Road 183.

A SWAT team moved in to apprehend Mayes, which is when he shot himself.

There are conflicting reports on whether Mayes is dead or alive.

Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards told the "Daily Journal" that Mayes was still alive when he was taken to the hospital.

Alexandria and Kyliyah Bain have been taken to a hospital for observation.

Mayes' wife, Teresa Mayes, told investigators her husband killed Jo Ann and her daughter Adrienne Bain on April 27 at their home in Whiteville, Tenn., so he could abduct Jo Ann Bain's two younger daughters.

There are reports that Mayes thought he was the father of the two younger girls.

Teresa Mayes is also facing charges in the case, as is Adam Mayes' mother, Mary Mayes.
