Tammi Smith cries in court on May 9 By Jennifer Thomas
PHOENIX -- Dressed in white, Tammi Smith took center stage in a Maricopa County Superior Courtroom Wednesday.
For the last three and a half weeks jurors in Smith's forgery and conspiracy trial have listened to witnesses and police officers talk about the 40-year-old Scottsdale resident and her alleged "obsessive" and, prosecutors contend, illegal efforts to adopt a tiny 8-month-old boy named Gabriel Johnson. But Wednesday was Smith's day as the one-time aspiring country singer took the witness stand in her own defense.
Under gentle questioning by one of her defense attorneys, Smith told the court of her strong Christian faith, her and her husband's efforts to adopt children, and her chance encounter in an Indiana airport with a young Valley mom named Elizabeth Johnson and Johnson's young son, Gabriel.
