PHOENIX -- It's not Kentucky or the Derby, but a lot of people pretended it was out at Turf Paradise.

Big hats filled the grandstands as people bet on live horse racing until the Kentucky Derby hit the airwaves.

Hoping to win money in a different way, many people were creative and made their own hats.

Charleen Keefe won last year for having one of the most creative hats and hopes to win again this year. She decorated a hat with hanging horses and a giant horseshoe.

Keefe said it makes watching the derby more fun this way. Since Derby Day fell on Cinco de Mayo, some people blended the two events by decorating sombreros.

The biggest question for many was what to drink, either a mint julep or a margarita.
