MESA, Ariz. -- Dozens of firefighters battled a fire that damaged three homes in Mesa Friday afternoon.

The homes are on Kiowa Avenue near Baseline Road and Country Club Drive.

More than 70 fire personnel from multiple agencies were on the scene along with 10 fire engines and four ladder trucks.

The fire reportedly started in the attic of one of the homes and quickly spread. The fire destroyed two homes, according to the Mesa Fire Department. Damage to the third home was not as severe.

The fire sent up a huge plume of smoke that could be seen for miles.

Nobody was hurt. A dog that was missing and feared dead was later found alive and okay. Pet birds and fish died in the second home that was destroyed by the fire.

Eight adults and 1 child have been displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Crews from Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, and Chandler were part of the firefighting effort.
