TONOPAH, Ariz. -- More than four days have passed since Karl Bonz's truck was seen crashing into a telephone pole and skidding more than a quarter of a mile. When witnesses rushed to help, no one was inside the car.
Bonz was last seen dropping off his two children at his mother's house and then driving away in the truck just minutes before the crash happened west of the intersection of 355th Avenue and Indian School Road in Tonopah.
"It's as if a person vanished in the middle of the day, in the middle of a scene, with people around," said Bonz's brother-in-law, Ryan Trudell.
"He was not underneath the vehicle, he was not in the general vicinity of the vehicle," Trudell said. "We've had ground searches, aerial searches, used ATVs, we've traced every stretch."
The question is whether Bonz, 43, disappeared on purpose or whether something happened to him. His cellphone and wallet were found in his truck.
Trudell said Bonz had been going through a difficult divorce, but disappearing like this would be very out of character for the X-ray technician and dad of a 9- and 11-year-old.
"That scene is just pure chaos," Trudell said. "It's not indicative of his personality."
Maricopa County sheriff's detectives were on the case but have scaled back their efforts and told the family it appears Bonz does not want to be found.
Still, Trudell said the family is worried about his safety and is asking for the public to keep an eye out for him. Anyone with information is asked to call authorities or the family at 480-415-7131.
