PHOENIX -- A week ago, Nancy Newton, 82, encountered an intruder who had broken into her home in the Phoenix area near 24th Street and Osborn Road.

According to police, Newton was hit in the face and beaten at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 22.

Four days later, Newton died because of complications due to her injuries.

The intruder is still on the loose. Police describe the suspects as a thin man between 18 and 28 years old, five feet 3 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was wearing a hoodie. Police have not released any other details about the man.

Julie Montgomery, who used to rent the home next door to Newton, said the 82-year-old was a very independent woman even though she was frail and carrying around an oxygen bottle. Montgomery said she can't believe anybody would do that to any woman, let alone one in Newton's condition.

Since this brutal attack and burglary, Montgomery said the neighborhood is on high alert, watching for anything suspicious until this man is caught.
