"American Idiot' inspires musical and brewPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- It was Green Day's Grammy Award winning album back in 2004. Now "American Idiot" is a smash-hit Broadway show and the tour has come to Arizona State University's Gammage Auditorium.
"Green Day's American Idiot: The Musical" tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. The show features Green Day's hits from that album, including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track "American Idiot."
"Green Day's American Idiot: The Musical" boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before.
"It doesn't make a lot of sense," Greenday frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told The New York Times, about the show, "but that's what I love about it. When people see it, it's going to be my wildest dream."
"American Idiot" is directed by the same man who helmed "Spring Awakening," Michael Mayer.
One home town brewery, San Tan Brewery of Chandler, has created an “American Idiot" Ale in excitement and support of the show. The ale is available for purchase both at SanTan and also at Gammage Audiorium during the show's short run.
Another local contribution to the "Green Day's American Idiot: The Musical" is Krystina Alabado. An ASU musical theatre graduate from Chandler, she is part of the musical ensemble cast.
"Green Day's American Idiot: The Musical" premiered at Tempe’s Gammage Auditorium, Tuesday, April 24, and will run through Sunday, April 29. Tickets are still available. To find out more about the show and ticket prices, check out asugammage.com.
