PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities in the Phoenix area say they have arrested 251 wanted felons in a large operation last week.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Monday that seven of those arrested were for sex offenses and numerous others were wanted for drugs and weapons offenses.

The agency says that more than 100 officers from 30 different agencies fanned out in Maricopa and Pinal counties to make the arrests in honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in a statement that the arrests likely prevented more crimes because "a fugitive is more desperate, more predatory, and more likely to commit crimes."

Among the fugitives arrested was 25-year-old Robert Cummings, who was wanted out of Chula Vista, Calif., for lewd or lascivious acts with a 14-year-old girl over a 10-day period. It's unclear whether he yet has an attorney.
