MESA, Ariz. -- Police tased a man holding a pipe wrench after they say he used it to open fire hydrants in Mesa Sunday night then fled from officers.

Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said Bernabe Pacheco used a large pipe wrench to open the fire hydrants along Horne as he walked north toward University Drive at about 7 p.m.

Landato said Pacheco got into a fight with some relatives as they tried to stop him.

Pacheco ran north across University at Horne, forcing vehicles to stop to avoid hitting him.

He refused to stop when confronted by police and ran north on Horne with the pipe wrench still in his hand. Officers pursued him on foot.

Pacheco was tased and detained at Fifth Street and Horne.

Pacheco was transported to Arizona Regional Hospital for medical treatment. He was later booked at the Mesa City Jail.

No officers were injured in the incident.
