Phoenix weather: The heat is on

PHOENIX -- Afternoon temperatures will rise well above average for this time of year today, although they'll actually be a down a few degrees from yesterday.

As a weak storm passes by to our north, look for a few mid- and high-level clouds, especially during the morning hours.  The proximity of the storm will also weaken our ridge of high pressure just enough to bring yesterday's mid 90s down to the low 90s this afternoon.

Look for a Valley high of about 92 degrees today under mostly sunny skies.

As the storm moves further away from Arizona, the high pressure begins to strengthen and our afternoon temperatures are set to soar. Friday's highs in the deserts should top out in the upper 90s, with triple digits expected all weekend and into Monday.

Sunday will likely be the warmest day, with afternoon highs peaking near at least 102 degrees.

A cool down is in the forecast for next week, with low 90s set to return by next Wednesday.

If you're running Pat's Run this weekend in Tempe, look for temperatures around the 7:05 a.m. start time for the 4.2 mile race to be in the upper 60s.  For the kids race at 9:30 a.m., they'll be a bit warmer in the upper 70s.  Expect light winds and lots of sunshine. Good luck to all the runners!
