PHOENIX (AP) -- An undercover operation by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies has ended with a man jailed and four pounds of black tar heroin off the streets.
Sheriff's spokesman Chris Hegstrom says the deputies stopped a car driven by 37-year-old Mario Alberto Hernandez Friday night in west Phoenix. A police dog sniffed out the heroin during a search.
In addition to the heroin, Hernandez was also wanted for 2 outstanding felony warrants and 1 misdemeanor warrant. Hernandez was arrested and booked in the 4th avenue jail.
Hegstrom says the heroin was smuggled from Mexico and was probably being transported through Arizona on the way to the East Coast.
