Preparing for disaster: Free app helps you inventory your home

PHOENIX -- When disaster strikes, it does so without warning and you can lose everything in the blink of an eye.

Do you know what "everything" is? Do you know what your stuff is worth? Do you have a home inventory?

According to the president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Kevin McCarty, you should. And, of course, there's an app for that.

"Creating a simple home inventory helps you track what you own and what it is worth, making important insurance decisions easier," reads "An inventory is especially important for families who have amassed years of personal possessions."

McCarty said the NAIC created the free myHOME app for iPhone and Android with one goal in mind: Make it easy for homeowners and renters to put together that essential home inventory.

The app takes you through the process, step by step.

"With this application, [making a home inventory] is far more efficient," McCarty said.

For those who do not have an iPhone or Android device, the NAIC has a home inventory checklist available for download.
