GUADALUPE, Ariz. -- A family is mourning the death of their 2-year-old boy fell into a canal and drowned Friday night.

Bisco Mesquita's family reported him missing from their home near Priest Drive and Baseline Road in the town of Guadalupe at around 6 p.m. Friday.

Deputies with Maricopa County Sheriff's Office were responding to the scene when the toddler's aunt found him floating in the Highline Canal, which runs south of Baseline Road.

A family member reportedly pulled the child from the swift-moving water.

Bisco was given CPR and rushed to a nearby children's hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead just an hour after he was first reported missing.

It's unclear how Bisco got away from him home near the canal.

Deputies are still investigating what went tragically wrong.
