Police: El Mirage man confessed to stabbing that killed fatherPosted: Updated:
EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- An El Mirage man is in jail facing a charge of second-degree murder after walking into a police station on Thursday to confess that he stabbed his father.
According to court documents, Albert Rodriguez Arias, 47, told the staff at the police station about the stabbing and said that his father needed help. Arias had blood on his arms and hands. He told police he stabbed his father numerous times because he was tired of being abused by his father. Police said Arias told them that his father had abused him for many years.
Arias said he stabbed his father with a knife and the knife broke off inside of him. Apparently it happened when Arias and his father got into an argument in the kitchen of their home near Grand Avenue and Thunderbird Road.
Neighbor Angela Franco said she was shocked and scared by the news. "I'm glad he turned himself in. I really am. It's the right thing to do."
As Arias was turning himself in, his mother called 911. "Her son had left the residence, and ran over to the police department, talked to officers, let them know that there had been an altercation at the home, that officers needed to respond to the house," according to Detective Kim Walden with the El Mirage Police Department.
When investigators arrived at the Arias home they found the victim lying on the kitchen floor bleeding. He had approximately six stab wounds to his body. Investigators also found the broken knife described by Arias.
Police have not yet released the name of the 76-year-old victim.
