Astronomers celebrate veto of billboard billPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Representatives of the Arizona's astronomy industry are celebrating Gov. Jan Brewer's veto of a bill that would have lifted a state ban on electronic billboards.
Professional astronomers say the veto means the state is serious about protecting dark skies needed for the astronomy industry and its economic boost to the state.
Billboard companies had asked the Legislature to change the law after a recent decision by the Arizona Court of Appeals that threatened about 70 existing billboards along interstates and highways.
Brewer said in her veto letter Wednesday she refuses to put at risk the thousands of jobs provided by the astronomy industry.
Billboard companies say they're disappointed with the veto, but they're willing to work with the astronomers on a compromise.
