Lawmaker: Bill to allow guns on campus is deadPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- The lawmaker who introduced legislation allowing concealed weapons on university and college campuses says the controversial proposal is dead.
State Sen. Ron Gould, a Republican from Lake Havasu City, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that there is not enough support among lawmakers for the bill.
The measure, which would have allowed gun owners with concealed-carry permits to bring their firearms on campus, drew strong opposition from university and police chiefs, among other critics.
Colleges and universities would have only been able to guns if they provided secure storage lockers.
Gould says he thinks lawmakers didn't want to vote on the controversial measure in an election year, especially amid mounting opposition from the public universities.
