Bow and arrow are stars in 'Hunger Games'Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- As any fan of "The Hunger Games" knows, the lead character, Katniss Everdeen, has killer aim with a bow and arrow.
In the story, the arrow is Katniss' weapon of choice when it comes to fighting for her life in the Hunger Games.
Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss, but was not an expert in archery when she got the role, so she turned to Khatuna Lorig, a four-time Olympian and bronze medalist.
Lorig was one of nearly 300 archers in Phoenix for the annual Arizona Cup competition and said when she was first hired, she had no idea she would be training Lawrence for such a major role.
The competition is taking place at the Ben Avery Shooting range through Sunday.
"They just told me some girl, an actress, wanted to learn archery, so I just said OK," Lorig said. "Then I found out and I was very thrilled."
Archery enthusiasts are hoping some of the fans of the movie decide to give the age-old sport a try.
The Arizona State Archery Association is offering a promotion Sunday, March 25, at the Ben Avery Shooting Range. People who bring their "Hunger Games" movie stub can get a free archery lesson from 9 a.m. to noon.
"We figured we'd take advantage of this and actually offer people the opportunity not only to be like Katniss, but to learn and enjoy a sport they can do anywhere, not only in the country, but in the world," said Steve Yee of the State Archery Association.
