Oro Valley mom arrested on murder charge in son's deathPosted: Updated:
ORO VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) -- Police say they've arrested an Arizona woman Friday on a first-degree murder charge involving the death of her 18-month-old son, saying they believe she purposefully gave him a fatal dose of methadone.
Twenty-one-year-old Donna Rose Smith also was arrested on a child abuse charge in her son Patrick's death.
It's unclear whether she yet has an attorney.
Oro Valley police Lt. Kara Riley says that officers found Patrick unresponsive in his home Feb. 5 and began trying to revive him.
He was pronounced dead at a local hospital soon after.
Riley says that since then, police have been working with prosecutors and the local medical examiner's office and were able to make an arrest Friday.
She says Smith lived with Patrick in her parents' home in the Tucson suburb of Oro Valley.
