Mesa officer shoots, kills suspect holding woman hostagePosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- Police in Mesa are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting.
At about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the Coral Point Apartments near Main Street and Dobson Road for a domestic-violence situation.
They arrived on the scene to find a man hold a woman hostage. He reportedly was armed with a knife.
The Mesa Police Department said the officers tried to negotiate with the suspect, but he refused let the woman go and surrender himself.
"The officers were trying to negotiate for her release," Detective Steve Berry said. "Ultimately he did not do that and one our officers, for her safety, did take a shot and hit the suspect."
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman is expected to be just fine and no officers were injured.
Investigators have not released any information about the couple and how they were related, nor have they said anything about what happened prior to the officers' arrival on the scene.
Police also have not released the name of the officer who shot the suspect. He or she has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure any time an officer fires his or her service weapon.
