Officer, suspect wrestle over rifle after shots-fired call near Phoenix parkPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- One person is in custody after an early morning officer-involved shooting in south-central Phoenix.
It happened Thursday morning in the neighborhood of 14th Street south of Baseline Road, just east of Circle K Park.
It started when a woman driving an SUV called 911 to report that a man in gray Cadillac was firing a gun. As she tried to avoid the gunfire, she crashed her SUV into a tree.
As police were responding to that call, a second 911 caller reported somebody trying to break into a vehicle just a few blocks away. That caller told the 911 dispatcher the suspect had shot into the vehicle and then broken in and was sitting inside.
As officers approached the vehicle with their guns drawn, the suspect got out of the car.
Police say the suspect tried to wrestle a rifle from the closest officer. As they struggled over the weapon, a shot was fired.
At that point, the suspect surrendered without further incident and officers took him into custody.
Investigators have not released any information about the man.
Detectives are still trying to sort out all of the details and events leading up to the fight between the officers and the suspect over the rifle.
No injuries were reported.
Information will be updated as it becomes available.
