TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police are searching for a man who exposed himself to an eighth-grade girl on Feb. 2.

Police said the girl was walking to Kyrene Middle School in the 7700 block of South Terrace Avenue when the man pulled up in a tan or gray four-door car.

The man pulled down his shorts/pants while sitting in the vehicle then left the area.

Police said the girl ran away from the stranger and was not touched or harmed.

The man was described as white or Hispanic, mid-30s, with short black hair, a medium build and a tan complexion. He was wearing sunglasses and was, or pretended to be, talking on a cellphone just prior to the exposure.

Detectives said the man's description did not fit any previous incidents reported in Tempe.

Police are working closely with the Kyrene School District and have allocated additional resources to the area.

Tempe police urge caregivers and parents to remind children of some basic personal safety tips:

Be aware of your surroundings -- be observant and on the alert.

When walking to and from school, do not wear personal music devices in ears.

Walk in pairs if possible.

Avoid and be extra aware of isolated places (alleys, for instance).

Never approach a stranger, in or out of a vehicle, or allow a stranger to approach you.

If someone approaches, run, yell, make as much noise as possible, tell an adult you know and trust, and call 911.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.
