Smoke-shop employee shoots would-be robber

PHOENIX -- A suspect who attempted to rob a Phoenix business is in the hospital after an employee at the business shot him.

It happened Tuesday night at the Smoke 4 Less near Cave Creek Road and Union Hills Drive in North Phoenix.

Phoenix police say that when the suspect attempted to rob the business, an employee shot at him. The would-be robber was hit in the leg.

The suspect fled the scene, but he didn't hide. According to police, the man went door to door in the neighborhood, asking for help.

Several homeowners called 911.

Officers eventually tracked the suspect to a nearby hospital and took him into custody without incident. He is expected to recover and face charges.

Investigators have not released any information about the suspect or the employee who shot him.

No other injuries were reported.
