Motorcycle crash shut down major roadway; 2 critical

PHOENIX - A man and woman are fighting for their lives after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a pickup truck Sunday evening.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. at 48th Avenue and Thunderbird Road across from Arizona State University West. 

The motorcycle riders were rushed to a local trauma center; both were in extremely critical condition. It's not clear if the victims were wearing helmets.

The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured.

An investigation into how the crash happened is under way.

Police have shut down Thunderbird Road at 48th Avenue. That closure was expected to remain in place through the night and into the early morning hours.
