MESA, AZ - Police in Mesa say they were forced to shoot a man who pointed a weapon at officers Sunday evening.
The shooting happened at 64th street and Brown Road near Granite Reef Park shortly after 5 p.m.
The situation started to unfold just before 5 p.m. at Gilbert and Broadway roads, which is about 12 minutes from the shooting scene. That's when police started getting calls about a person driving a small pickup truck erratically.
Two officers on patrol spotted the driver. They say there was not an active pursuit, but they did keep an eye on the vehicle from a safe distance for more than seven miles.
After crashing the pickup into a wall at 64th Street and Brown Road, police say the suspect got out of the truck and pointed a gun at officers. Those officers opened fire, wounding the suspect. He is listed in critical but stable condition.
No officers were hurt.
During the commotion there was a separate four-vehicle accident at the intersection. The conditions of the accident victims were not immediately available.
