PEORIA, Ariz. -- Rescue crews were called in after a swarm of bees attacked a group of kids in Peoria Thursday afternoon.

The boys and girls, ages 5 to 14, were attacked outside a business near 91st and Olive avenues.

The bees made a hive in a nearby irrigation box. Firefighters said one of the kids lifted the lid to the box and the swarm attacked them. The bees chased them about a quarter of a mile down the street until the victims ran into a nearby store for safety.

Five victims were transported to a local hospital for non life-threatning injuries. Officials said the victims were each stung about 10 to 20 times on their faces and necks.

Firefighters doused the hive with foam, which killed most of the bees.
