MESA, Ariz. -- One man is dead and two others, including a Mesa police officer, were injured during a drug deal gone awry at an East Valley Fry's parking lot.

The shoot-out happened Tuesday night during the after-work rush at the Fry's shopping center on Ellsworth and Broadway roads in Mesa.

Police say several undercover officers went to the parking lot to meet up with suspected drug dealers, but when the officers arrived several of the suspects began shooting.

According to Mesa police Detective Steve Berry, an undercover officer was struck in the lower leg. He is expected to survive.

The officers returned fire, killing one of the suspects and injuring a second.

Three other suspects were taken into custody, including a man recently released from prison who was wanted for several felonies, Berry said.

Danielle Moreland works in a salon in the shopping center and heard the commotion.

"I heard like three or four shots," Moreland said. "This area, especially with the Fry's, we're always pretty busy, so it's kind of crazy."

A large portion of the shopping center parking lot was closed as police investigated through the night.
