CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A 72-year-old man was shot and killed after he reportedly pointed a gun at police officers on Tuesday.

Chandler police responded to a report of a suicidal man at a home near Alma School Road and the Loop 202 at about 5 p.m.

When officers arrived they learned that an elderly woman was inside the home with Edward Flener, who had a gun and was threatening suicide.

When officers called out to Flener, he pointed a handgun at them and Officer Brian Dunn was forced to shoot him, according to police spokesman Detective Seth Tyler.

Flener was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Dunn is a four-year veteran of the Chandler Police Department. He was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard department protocol.

The investigation is ongoing.
