MESA, Ariz. -- A detention officer for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was arrested early Tuesday morning after he allegedly threatened his 19-year-old son with a gun.

Jeffery Higgins was booked for aggravated assault and criminal damage.

Police said Higgins was intoxicated and wanted to leave his home, but his son blocked his way to keep him from driving.

Higgins pointed his gun at the son then got into his truck and left, according to Sgt. Ed Wessing with the Mesa Police Department.

Police officers located Higgins in his truck east of the docks at Saguaro Lake and took him into custody without incident. The gun was found on the seat of the truck.

Higgins refused to answer questions about the incident.

He was released Tuesday afternoon after posting bond.

Higgins will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident, according to Officer Christopher Hegstrom, spokesman for the sheriff's office.
