Surface to air missles found inside AZ residencePosted: Updated:
AJO, AZ - A 38-year old man has been arrested in a case involving military surface to air missle simulators known as GTR-18A "Smoky Sams." Pima County Sheriff's Deputy's obtained a search warrant and arrested John D. Ford on four counts of possession of a prohibited weapon and other related charges. A warrant was also served on another family member's home.
Deputies say they found other items including what they believed to be two galvanized metal pipe bombs and other bomb making materials. During a render safe procedure using the bomb squad robot, one of the pipe bombs exploded unintentially but fortunetly no one was injured. Ajo fire and ambulance crews were on scene when the explosion took place. All other items found inside were rendered safe.
Besides Ford, Becky Leon, age 26 was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence. The ATF ETB and ATF Tucson are continuing the investigation along with the Pima regional bomb squad.
