Congressional redistricing map finally approvedPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The fight is over, for now. Arizona's redistricting commission, approved new congressional and legislative maps Tuesday.
The vote was split down party lines and the independent sided with democrats, but the final maps could come at a cost.
It was a passionate debate. And one that quickly spilled into nasty rhetoric and politics as usual. The boiling point when Governor Brewer tried and failed to oust the chair, Colleen Mathis.
"The personal attacks on various commissioners were brutal and often times dishonest," said Pima County Democratic Chair Jeff Rogers.
But after months of debate, finally a new legislative and congressional map was approved Tuesday with a 3-2 vote.
And both democrats and republicans aren't completely happy with the new lines.
"The people who really got screwed here are independents. Independents ought to have a say in moving a district one way or the other," said Rogers.
"They did things behind closed doors. They were partisan. It was not an independent redistricting decision," said Pima County Republican Chair Carolyn Cox.
The new congressional map features a new ninth district. Three of the districts will be competitive, but Pima County dems say it's not enough.
"I'm a little disappointed there aren't more competitive districts," said Rogers.
Republicans say it's too many.
"I think the focus was much more on competitive districts rather than keeping communities of interest together," said Cox.
But the biggest impact could come from the new legislative map.
It reconfigures Arizona's 30 districts. About 17 favor the GOP. Ten swing democratic and about 3 are competitive.
And Jeff Rogers says dems could make a move, "I don't think districts are set up where they can take over, but we can make significant inroads."
For now the process is out of the commission's hands at least for another 10 years.
"It's never going to be what you would consider non partisan," said Cox.
As people continue to question, if a process like this can truly be independent.
