TUCSON, Ariz. -- Over 60 AmeriCorps members who committed to a year of service to Southern Arizona were sworn in Monday.

It was all part of a kick-off to a city wide service project at Peter Howell Elementary School.

The members serve the region impacting education, health and the environment.

"Martin Luther King obviously a civil rights leader and he stood for volunteerism is just when everyone else has the day off instead of doing something fun its important to give back," said AmeriCorps volunteer Rachel Stendahl.

In 2010, AmeriCorps members recruited more than $17,000 volunteers that served in Southern Arizona for over 48,000 hours.
