Phoenix teen shot at her birthday partyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A 16-year-old Phoenix girl was shot while celebrating her birthday early Sunday morning.
Phoenix police responded to a shooting at a home near 79th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road at approximately 12:30 a.m.
Many of the partygoers, including the victim, ran inside the home when shots rang out in the backyard, according to police spokesman Officer James Holmes. The teen suffered a gunshot wound to her leg.
Several guests fled the home and responding officers observed a green 1997 Pontiac leaving the area at a high rate of speed.
Holmes said the officers stopped the vehicle and saw a handgun inside. Six "investigative leads" were detained.
Police questioned the five males and one female ranging in age from 18 to 21, but officers were not able to immediately determine if they or the weapon were related to the shooting. All six were later released.
The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for the non life-threatening injury.
Several partygoers left the scene prior to police arrival. The Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
