MESA, Ariz. -- A gun discharged on a school bus in Mesa Friday afternoon and an 8-year-old boy is facing possible suspension or expulsion but no criminal charges at this time.

The boy had apparently taken the handgun to school and had it in his backpack, according to Steve Berry with the Mesa Police Department.

He was "manipulating the gun" in the backpack and it went off. A single shot went through a bus seat. No one was hit or injured.

Sources told 3TV that the boy had the gun in his backpack to show a friend not to hurt anyone.

The bus was from the Franklin Northeast Elementary School near Power Road and Adobe Street in east Mesa.

Berry said approximately 30 children were on its after-school route near 74th Street and June Place when the shooting occurred.

Police are investigating where the boy got the gun.
