MESA, Ariz. -- An elderly man was hit and killed by a car while trying to cross a street in Mesa Wednesday morning.
According to Mesa police, the man was struck while riding a motorized scooter near Southern Avenue and Longmore just before 10 a.m.
Police said the man was not in a crosswalk.
"It's a very, very dangerous situation if you were on foot or on bicycle, certainly a dangerous situation in a motorized scooter, but just 100, 200 yards down the roadway you have a regular intersection with lights, traffic signals," said Detective Steve Berry with the Mesa Police Department.
"You are always, always going to be safest to go to that intersection and cross the roadway," Berry added. "Doing it in the middle of the road is very dangerous."
Police said the driver did not appear to be impaired.
"It just appears to be an unfortunate accident," Berry said.
