Orangutan predicts Fiesta Bowl, Insight Bowl winnersPosted: Updated:
Kasih is a 5-year-old Bornean orangutan, the baby of her family. According to Linda Hardwick, spokeswoman for the Phoenix Zoo, Kasih has a pretty good record.
There were two footballs placed in her play area -- one from Stanford the other from Oklahoma State University. The idea was whichever ball Kasih touched first will be the winner of game. After a few minute of contemplation, Kasih grabbed the Stanford ball.
About 10 minutes later, Kasih was presented with footballs from University of Oklahoma and Iowa. After a bit of coy teasing, the little diva did a somersault before snatching up the University of Oklahoma football and making a run for it. (Watch the video below to see Kasih's awesome "roll and grab" maneuver. It's about 1:07 in.)
Only time will tell if Kasih's predictions are correct. The Fiesta Bowl showdown happens Monday, Jan. 2. The Insight Bowl is Friday, Dec. 30.
As for Kasih and the other orangutans on display at the Phoenix Zoo, scientists estimate that their wild brethren could be extinct in five to 10 years if their forest habitat continues to be destroyed at the current rate.
The Phoenix Zoo is home to more than 1,300 animals, including 200 endangered species, and participates in 37 Species Survival Plans to breed and maintain endangered species populations in captivity.
