Off-dut Phoenix police officer shoots apparent home intruderPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- An off duty Phoenix police officer opened fire on someone who was apparently trying to break into his home Tuesday. It happened near Central and Baseline while the officer was asleep.
According to police, the 44-year-old officer, a 10-year veteran of the police force, woke up when he heard a knock at his front door. Then his doorbell rang and someone called a name that was not his, so he ignored it. But then he saw someone trying to get in through the kitchen window.
"The officer in fear for his safety and his life at that point fires one round toward the suspect the suspect wisely climbs back out the window and then takes off westbound through the neighborhood," said James Holmes from the Phoenix Police Dept.
A man and two women reportedly got into a silver SUV and fled. The officer got into his vehicle to follow them, but they got away.
