Pit bull attacks dog, ownerPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- A dog and his owner are recovering after being attacked by a pit bull on their evening walk. And now it's the pit bull's owner who is on the loose.
Reggie, an 8-year-old black lab, suffered multiple puncture wounds and a severed artery that required surgery.
His owner, Mark Barriger, was also bitten on one of his fingers and had to have several stitches.
Barriger says he took his dog out for a walk in the area of Hardy Drive and Guadalupe Road, just a few minutes from his home, when a pit bull ran toward them and attacked Reggie.
"And then all of a sudden, wham, that dog just comes running straight across the street, locks onto Reggie and starts dragging him," Barriger said
The mauling continued for a few minutes until a man who lives nearby grabbed a rope and tied up the pit bull.
The dog, along with another stray, was taken to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.
The pit bull that attacked will be quarantined for 10 days and then likely put down because of its aggressive behavior.
"They clearly were out on the loose, they weren't restrained, they weren't chained, they had no tags," Barriger said. "There's a whole series of things that they've done that are irresponsible as an owner."
Meanwhile, vet and medical bills have added up to more than a thousand dollars and Barriger says if the owners don't come forward, he'll likely be stuck with the bill.
"I just hope whoever owns the dogs comes forward and claims some responsibility for them," he said.
