PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are calling a toddler's death a tragic accident.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said a woman and her two children were dropped off by her friend at an apartment complex near Highland and 26th avenues in Phoenix at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The mom went to the driver's side of the Mercedes Benz to speak with the friend while 19-month-old Jayden Samaniegocamona and his 4-year-old sister started walking to an apartment.

At some point, Jayden walked back to the passenger side of the car, out of sight of the driver and his mother, according to Thompson. As the car pulled away to leave, the boy was run over.

The man and the woman transported Jayden to a hospital where he died of his injuries.

Thompson said it does not appear that the 36-year-old driver was impaired.

This investigation is ongoing.
