PHOENIX -- A 4-year-old boy died after being run over by an SUV in the parking lot of a West Valley Walmart store.

It happened at about 8 p.m. Thursday near 91st Avenue and Thomas Road in Phoenix.

According to police, Jose Toscano-Penuelas was pushing a shopping cart when he was hit.

Sgt. Steve Martos said the child's mother was loading her purchases into her car when Jose darted between vehicles and into the driving lane. The driver did not see the child and ran him over.

The boy's mother pulled him from under the SUV. He wasn't breathing. Police officers and bystanders performed CPR until fire crews arrived.

Jose was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he later died.

The man driving the SUV that hit the child stayed at the scene. Police said he was not impaired.

Police are not releasing the driver's name because he has not been charged in the case.
