Host Bob Lee interviews Don Gates, Program Manager, My Healthy Pima and Janos Wilder, participant, Smart Choices for Healthy Dining program. The ‘My Healthy Pima’ campaign was funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Gates says the Pima County Health Department has partnered with Activate Tucson, the Carondelet Health Network, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, the University of Arizona, the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, the YMCA of Southern Arizona and other related organizations. He says Pima County is one of 44 areas nationwide awarded a two-year grant.

Gates says nearly $16 million will be spent in Pima County during the next two years to fund programs to educate the community about the risks of getting fat, and the benefits of healthy living, eating and exercise.  He says that includes supporting and promoting more farmers markets as well as home vegetable gardens and education in the schools and after-school programs. He says the programs will also be brought into workplaces and neighborhoods as well as faith-based organizations.

Wilder talks about the “Smart Choices for Healthy Dining program.”  He says over 20 local restaurants have agreed to identify healthy menu items. He says the restaurants will be identified with program signs and will be handing out brochures explaining healthy-eating.
