Ariz. legislators targeted latest synthetic drugsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona legislators are gearing up to update state criminal laws to combat the latest efforts by distributors of so-called designer drugs.
Republican Sen. Linda Gray of Glendale says she and Republican Rep. Karen Fann of Prescott are working with pharmacists, regulators and law enforcement officials to add the latest synthetic drugs to Arizona's list of controlled substances.
Gray says the problem is that distributors of synthetic drugs make minor changes in their chemical makeup to try to stay ahead of the law.
Arizona earlier this year enacted emergency legislation outlawing the chemically treated blend of herbs that some people use instead of marijuana.
Supporters of the ban say the synthetic drug known as spice has dangerous side effects that vary among individuals.
