PHOENIX -- Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson made a surprise visit to the Occupy Phoenix camp late Wednesday night.

Jackson, in town for another event, spent about an hour meeting with protesters at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Phoenix, encouraging them to keep the movement going. He has made other recent stops to Occupy camps in Atlanta and Lincoln, Neb.

"If this movement remains nonviolent and focused, it will prevail. We deserve economic equality," Jackson told the crowd of about 25.

Jackson plans to rejoin the group Thursday evening for a march.
