Man critical after head-on crashPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A man is extremely critical condition after an early morning head-on crash that forced the closure of a major Phoenix street Tuesday.
It happened at 7:15 a.m. on 48th Street north of Elliot Road in Ahwatukee.
According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump, a Honda Accord crossed over the center line and slammed head-on into a Dodge pickup truck. It's not yet clear why the Accord crossed into oncoming traffic.
Aerial video from the scene showed the mangled Accord and the pickup on its side.
The extrication operation was extremely complicated. It took rescue crews about 45 minutes to tear apart the Accord to get to the trapped driver.
"The Fire Department did an outstanding job," Crump said. "When you look at the damage that is done here, it is absolutely tremendous damage."
That man was taken to a local hospital. He reportedly was in extremely critical condition.
"We're awaiting word [on his current condition]," Crump said.
The driver of the Dodge also was taken to a local hospital. Crump said that driver appeared to have suffered relatively minor injuries.
