Big Give Provides 47,000 Meals in One DayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - 3TV's one-day Big Give event in partnership with Fry's Food Stores and St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance was a success raising enough money and food to provide 47,000 meals to our community. Currently, one in four Arizona children are dealing with hunger issues.
All the food and money collected at the event went to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance. The one-day event is designed to draw attention to the plight of hunger during one of the busiest grocery shopping days of the year. Shoppers were encouraged to come down and donate a turkey, non-perishable food items or money to St. Mary's Food Bank.
If people are unable to particpate you can still donate to the Arizona's Family Holiday Food Drive at their local Fry's Food store from now until Dec. 31. The goal is raise enough food and money donations to provide 1 million meals to our community.
The support is greatly needed. Currently, turkey donations are down by 30 percent and donations of canned goods are down by 50 percent, according to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance.
Terry Shannon, the CEO of St. Mary's, said hunger has nearly doubled in Arizona since the economy starting tanking in 2008.
"We ask that during this season, you remember those who continue to suffer the fallout from this recession and need assistance from their neighbors," Shannon wrote on the organization's website. "St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance can only provide these services, and feed the one in four children now struggling in our state, with your help."
Shannon said about 50,000 families rely on food bank service's during the holiday season.
