PHOENIX (AP) -- The parents of a 2-year-old boy who were arrested after he overdosed on a prescription painkiller at a Phoenix motel have pleaded not guilty to child abuse and child neglect charges.
Maricopa County prosecutors say 37-year-old Anthony Casillas and 35-year-old Jennifer Campos entered their pleas Thursday. Their initial pre-trial conference is scheduled for Jan. 4.
Authorities say Casillas and Campos are accused of giving their son a mixture of Kool-Aid and methadone on Oct. 23, causing the toddler to overdose.
The parents allegedly gave their son the mixture because his gums were bleeding and his teeth were rotting.
Court records indicate the child had methadone, amphetamine, acetone and nicotine in his system.
Authorities say the boy is continuing medical treatment, but still isn't fully responsive.
