SAN LUIS, Ariz. -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a Mexican teen for trying to smuggle more than 2,500 rounds of AK-47 ammunition into Mexico.

The 18-year-old male from San Luis, Sonora, Mexico, was referred for a secondary inspection of his car prior to leaving the United States on Tuesday.

When CBP officers searched the trunk, they located two containers filled with 2,520 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition. The ammo and vehicle were processed for seizure.

The teen was arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
