Motorcycle rider vanishes after leading officers on high-speed chasePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Police are searching for the motorcycle rider who led officers on a high-speed chase Wednesday night.
It came to an end shortly before 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel at Interstate 17 and Dunlap Avenue in Phoenix.
It started when Department of Public Safety officers spotted a motorcycle speeding south on I-17 from Glendale Avenue. Officers tried to stop him, but the driver took off, leading officers on a chase that reportedly reached speeds of 100 mph at times.
Ground units called off the pursuit when the motorcycle got off the freeway at Bethany Home Road. The Phoenix Police Department's Firebird helicopter spotted the motorcycle a short time later and followed it to the hotel where the rider abandoned the bike in the parking lot and ran away.
Officers set up a perimeter, but were unable to locate the suspect. A black leather jacket and black gloves believed to belong to the suspect reportedly were found on the roof of the hotel. Officers finally cleared the scene at about 10 p.m.
It's not clear why the motorcycle rider refused to stop for the DPS officers, but police determined the motorcycle had been stolen earlier in the week.
No description of the suspect was immediately available.
