PHOENIX (AP) -- A man has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and lifetime probation after his 2-year-old granddaughter was shot in the face at a Phoenix apartment.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 38-year-old Gerardo Garcia-Segura was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in September to two counts of child abuse.

Phoenix police investigators say Garcia-Segura's 8-year-old son accidentally shot the girl last May 10 while she was playing with other children.

They say the boy was playing with the .22-caliber handgun he found in his parents' room next to a stuffed animal when it went off about one foot away from the girl.

The bullet hit the victim between her nose and right cheek and she survived.

Authorities say the 8-year-old boy and his 6-year-old brother hid the weapon after the shooting.
